Silk ribbon for beginners

First of all here come some points of encouragement for beginner stitchers mastering silk ribbon embroidery.

There is no need to be worried about mistakes at all, for there is no option for a mistake in ribbon embroidery. Whatever you do not like could be either fixed to a proper shape with thread or adopted to your design as its new intricate element.

Still, if you do not feel much confidence in stitching...

- buy a kit for ribbon embroidery with all instructions and materials included in it;

- or use The Seasons in Ribbon Embroidery book to help you with the stitching process;

- or just start with doing a Doodle Cloth of the Ribbon Embroidery Stitch Guide;

- or use a printed panel ready to embroider to help you with colours and composition.

Choose whatever you like of it, and whatever you feel to be helpful for you!

Here comes some advice, tips and ideas on what ribbon colour / size is worth choosing for your very first purchase of natural silk ribbon.

Ribbon colour

The Greens. Whatever you are going to stitch as your first project, you will definitely need greens! Thus, it is recommended to get at least two shades of it, for using several shades of one colour will add depth to your embroidery.

Your Favourites. If you have got an idea of what flowers to start with, buy the ribbon of proper colours. Still it often happens that for the very first design we just want to play around the ribbon stitches, embroidering some imaginary, unreal flowers. This way seems to be easier because it allows us to think more about stitches we are mastering, and not about proper flower shapes. If so, choose just Your Favourite ribbon colours for those flowers and enjoy working with them as much as you enjoy ribbon stitching! Shall you doubt, take natural pastel colours for they could be easily brightened up by dyeing after you have finished stitching. And mind the selected colours go nicely together.

White silk ribbon. Having some white silk ribbon in your stock always is very nice. And it is for two reasons: firstly, you can dye white into whatever colour you want, if a need comes. Then, white matches any other colour, adding brightness and tenderness to your embroidery design.

Ribbon size

7mm silk ribbon. Natural silk ribbon used for stitching comes in four different sizes (widths): 2, 4, 7 and 13mm.

(Of course, wider silk ribbon is also produced by ribbon manufacturers. Still it is used mostly for some kind of "applique work" usually called ribbonwork.) You cannot tell beforehand which ribbon size you will be using more often. It depends on what kind of ribbon designs you would prefer. Shall it be miniatures, you will need 2 and 4mm silk ribbon, sometimes 7mm ribbon and probably none of 13mm one. If you become fond of creating huge artworks, you might not need 4 and/or 2mm ribbon at all! And so on, and so as... What should be done for your first purchase then? Take 7mm ribbon as the basic size of your stock. It is rather easy to come through the fabric, still you will see perfectly the shapes of your stitches. The narrower ribbon will not always show the stitch shapes properly, while the wider one is a bit tricky to come through the fabric. And since while you study ribbon embroidery, you are going to meet some difficulties (as it usually happens when you are mastering something that is totally new for you), it does not seem reasonable to add one more!

Other ribbon widths. To add some fine details to your design, you may take very little of 2mm silk ribbon as well. And if you need a more distinguished centre for your embroidery, take some 13mm ribbon.

4mm silk ribbon is to give some touch of middle sized elements for your design. Choose it on your demand only. And remember, the basis of your stock should be of 7mm size!

Ribbon quantity

3 metres. For most middle-sized projects 3m of each kind of silk ribbon would definitely be enough! The average amount is 1.5m to 2.2m. The less of that ammount is needed only for some details of your design (but you never can tell which ones, so it would be safer to have 3 meters in stock not to run out of the ribbon colour while stitching)! And it really is for some special cases that you might need more than that, e. g.: like for that ribbon embroidery design.
