THE KIT STORY
Opuntia or Prickly pear
This is an amazing watercolour by Paul de Longpre, an American artist of French origin. He had a wonderful garden around his house in California, and its flowers became dominating theme of Paul`s artworks. That garden remained a tourist attraction for decades after the artist had gone. ...Well but did he have any opuntia there?
According to a legend of The Aztec, the town of Tenochtitlan (that is modern Mexico city) was founded on the very place where opuntia grew. And an eagle was sitting on it, eating a snake.
This scene from the legend is even depicted in Mexico coat of arms! Now we know the legend.
Indeed, in wild nature opuntia may grow as big as about a tree. It is totally different when planted as a room plant: just a small cactus in a pot.
There are a lot of different kinds of opuntia. Its fruit and even stems are used for food. Once I was lucky to taste the prickly pear at one of the markets in Turkey. And that fruit tasted as… a strawberry!
The plant is also grown to get a natural dye called carmine. Besides, it is used for cattle food.
To make a long story short, it is really a wonderful plant!
